Melbourne Airport Braces for Surge in Passengers During School Holiday Period

by CiCi

As Melbourne gears up for the school holidays, the city’s airport is preparing for a significant rise in passenger numbers, driven by the convergence of Easter and Anzac Day long weekends.

Melbourne Airport is expecting international passenger traffic to rise by 24% compared to the same period last year, as families and holidaymakers extend their getaways to make the most of the public holidays. Over the upcoming school holiday period, more than two million passengers are anticipated to pass through the airport. Additionally, 729,000 travellers are expected to either depart or arrive during the week surrounding Anzac Day.

April 17, the Thursday before the Easter long weekend, is predicted to be the busiest day, with 118,000 passengers expected to travel. Despite the return of school schedules after Easter Tuesday, travel volume remains high, with a forecasted 11% increase in passenger numbers between April 22 and April 28 compared to last year.

Jai McDermott, Chief of Ground Transport, Property, and Retail at Melbourne Airport, confirmed the airport is well-prepared to manage the influx of passengers. “We have ramped up operations across the airport to meet the demand, with additional cleaning, security, and customer service staff on hand to ensure smooth travel experiences,” McDermott said.

The combination of the Easter and Anzac Day holidays has spurred a surge in passenger numbers, as many travellers take advantage of the extended break. McDermott advised passengers to book their parking in advance to secure the best rates and to allow an extra 30 minutes for their journey to the airport.

In addition to increased staff presence, Melbourne Airport is undergoing significant upgrades to improve passenger experience. A new baggage hall has recently opened in Terminal 3, and a state-of-the-art security checkpoint is now available in Terminal 1. While these infrastructure projects are expected to cause some disruptions, McDermott emphasized that they are part of long-term improvements to the airport’s facilities, including road upgrades to alleviate congestion and provide space for terminal expansions.

Passengers are encouraged to be patient as these enhancements are made to shape the airport’s future.
