March break this year kicks off a little earlier for some students in Durham Region, with a bonus holiday on March 7. While most of Ontario will enjoy their break from March 10 to 14, several school boards in the region have added an extra day off, starting the break on March 7.
Ontario school boards submit their annual calendars to the Ministry of Education, which sets the dates for March break well in advance. This year, March 10-14 is the official break period, but some schools have chosen to extend the holiday by one day. Students at Conseil scolaire Viamonde and Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir will begin their break on March 7, as well as those in elementary and secondary schools within the Durham District School Board and Durham Catholic District School Board.
Parents can check with their local school board to confirm whether their child’s school is observing the extra day off.
March Break Activity Ideas
With the break fast approaching, parents may be wondering how to keep their kids entertained. Many communities across the province are offering various activities for children. These include:
March Break Camps: Check with local municipalities to see if there are still openings for camps or after-school programs.
Library, Community Centre, and Museum Events: Many libraries, community centers, and museums offer special programs or events during March break.
Maple Syrup Tours: Maple syrup producers may be running tours during this time, so it’s worth checking with local producers.
Indoor Activities: Movie theaters, educational centers, shopping malls, and private indoor play facilities often offer special events or activities throughout the week.
Make sure to reach out to your local venues to confirm availability and secure spots for your child’s activities during the break.
