As part of the observance, many public services, including banks, hospitals, delivery services, and government offices, will be closed throughout the country. In line with local regulations, when Samiljeol falls on a weekend, the holiday is observed on the next weekday. This year, with March 1st landing on a Sunday, many people are adjusting their schedules to accommodate these service interruptions.
While malls generally stay open during holidays, Samiljeol sees a break in normal retail operations. Major retail chains such as E-Mart, Lotte Mart, and Homeplus will close for the day. These closures align with the supermarkets’ regular schedule of shutting down on the second and fourth Sundays of each month. Shoppers are advised to plan ahead to avoid any inconvenience.
The holiday also impacts the financial markets, with the stock exchange suspending all trading activities, including transactions in ETFs, ELWs, and bonds. Investors are advised to adjust their trading strategies, as the market remains closed for the day.
Educational institutions, including elementary, middle, and high schools, will also be closed on March 1st. As a result, the new semester will begin on March 4th, after the national observance. Daycare centers across the country will similarly follow this break, allowing families to join in the celebrations.
Hospitals and pharmacies, however, have discretion over their operating hours. It is recommended that citizens confirm the availability of medical services ahead of time to avoid disruptions in healthcare access.
Despite the closures, the mood across the nation will be one of reflection and patriotism. Citizens often come together with their families and communities, participating in parades, speeches, and educational events to honor the sacrifices made by those who fought for Korean independence. Public spaces are filled with national flags and banners, reinforcing the spirit of pride and unity.
This year’s celebration is further marked by a heavy snowfall expected to blanket the region. Forecasts predict up to one meter of snow in various parts of the country, creating challenging travel conditions. The Korea Meteorological Administration has issued warnings about freezing rain and hazardous roads, advising citizens to exercise caution as they take part in the commemorations.
The significance of Samiljeol extends beyond a simple holiday. It serves as a reminder of the nation’s history, encouraging reflection on the importance of independence and the ongoing effort to preserve the values of freedom and sovereignty.
