In most Canadian provinces, the third Monday of February marks Family Day, a statutory holiday designed to give workers a break in the middle of winter. However, Quebec is the notable exception, as the province does not observe Family Day or its regional equivalents, like Islander Day in Prince Edward Island or Louis Riel Day in Manitoba.
While workers in other provinces get to enjoy a long weekend in February, Quebec employees continue working as usual. The absence of this mid-winter break has sparked the question: does Quebec’s list of statutory holidays make up for missing out on Family Day?
Quebec’s statutory holiday roster is distinct from the rest of the country. The province observes only eight statutory holidays each year, including five nationwide holidays and three provincial ones. This is fewer than Ontario, which observes nine, and British Columbia, which leads with 11.
Though Quebec doesn’t get Family Day, the province’s approach to holidays is unique in that it allows for different observances, and its calendar is more streamlined. In fact, Quebec’s fewer holidays often come with additional benefits, such as an emphasis on work-life balance and other leave options.
For many Quebecers, while they may miss the February break, the absence of Family Day is offset by the holidays they do enjoy — just in different months and under a different structure. Whether or not it truly compensates for the lack of a February long weekend remains subjective, but it does highlight the province’s distinct cultural and legal approach to statutory holidays.
