Mahama Pledges to Reinstate July 1 as Public Holiday

President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to restore July 1 as a statutory public holiday, reaffirming its significance as Ghana’s Republic Day and Senior Citizens’ Day.

During a Thank You tour in the Western Region on Wednesday, February 5, Mahama proposed that the reinstated holiday also serve as a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving. He emphasized the importance of national reflection and gratitude, citing scripture: “In all things, give thanks.”

To facilitate the observance, Mahama revealed plans to establish a committee of religious leaders to coordinate preparations. Additionally, he confirmed that his administration would submit amendments to the Public Holidays Act in Parliament to officially reinstate July 1 as a statutory holiday.

As part of the legislative changes, Mahama also pledged to honor a longstanding commitment to the Muslim community by introducing an additional public holiday for Eid-ul-Fitr.
