Unity Day 2025: Date, History, Symbols, and Traditions of the National Holiday

by CiCi

Unity Day in Ukraine is traditionally celebrated on January 22, and in 2025, the holiday will hold special significance as it commemorates the unification of Ukraine’s lands. Despite the current security situation in the country, Ukrainians will continue to celebrate their desire for unity.

History of Unity Day

Unity Day marks a pivotal moment in Ukraine’s history. On January 22, 1919, the Ukrainian People’s Republic (UPR) and the West Ukrainian People’s Republic (WUPR) officially united, forming a sovereign Ukrainian state. The Act of Unification was proclaimed at Sofiivska Square in Kyiv, bringing together regions like the Dnipro, Bukovina, Transcarpathia, and Galicia. This unification laid the foundation for a single, independent Ukrainian state.

Under Soviet rule, the commemoration of this event was suppressed, and the significance of Unity Day was lost in much of Ukraine’s public life. However, the memory was preserved by the residents of Western Ukraine and by Ukrainian political emigration in countries such as the United States and Western Europe, where Unity Day celebrations continued.

Traditions and Symbols of Unity Day

The central tradition of Unity Day is the creation of a “living chain,” symbolizing the physical and spiritual unification of Ukraine’s diverse regions. The first living chain occurred in 1990, stretching from Kyiv to Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Stryi, Ternopil, Zhytomyr, and Rivne. This display of solidarity continues to be a powerful tradition.

One of the cultural symbols of Unity Day is the song “For Ukraine,” written by Ukrainian poet Mykola Voronyi in 1917. The song quickly became an anthem of unity, sung by the Ukrainian army, particularly the Sich Riflemen, and spread across the country.

Celebrations in 2025

Due to the ongoing security situation, Unity Day celebrations in 2025 will be held with restrictions. Authorities are encouraging citizens to engage with the holiday through online broadcasts and other remote events, ensuring both safety and participation in this important national occasion.
