As Singapore’s retail sector enters the high-stakes holiday shopping season, experts are warning of a significant increase in cyber threats. The latest Verizon 2024 Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) highlights a surge in cyberattacks during this critical period, which spans from late November through January, encompassing major events such as Black Friday, Christmas, and year-end sales. These months are pivotal for retailers, contributing heavily to their annual revenue.
The report, which analyzed more than 725 security incidents within the retail industry, found that 369 resulted in data theft. A striking 96% of these breaches were attributed to external actors, with system intrusions, social engineering, and web application vulnerabilities being the leading causes.
One of the most concerning findings is the rise in pretexting, a type of social engineering attack, which is now outpacing traditional phishing tactics in frequency. Pretexting involves attackers impersonating legitimate entities to manipulate individuals into revealing confidential information.
With more retailers shifting towards online sales and integrating loyalty programs, the report underscores the need for robust cybersecurity measures. It stresses that investing in updated IT solutions and providing comprehensive employee training are essential to defending against such cyber threats.
Retailers who neglect to bolster their digital security risk not only immediate financial losses but also long-term damage to their brand reputation and consumer trust, particularly in safeguarding sensitive payment and personal data.
