Puducherry Declares Holiday for Schools and Colleges Amid Cyclone Fengal’s Aftermath

by CiCi
In response to the widespread impact of Cyclone Fengal, the Puducherry government has announced a closure for all schools and colleges, both public and private, on Tuesday, December 3, due to the severe weather conditions. The region is grappling with unprecedented rainfall and flooding caused by the cyclone, which has severely affected coastal areas of north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

The state’s Education Minister, A. Namachivayam, confirmed the decision to cancel educational activities for the day, citing the ongoing adverse weather conditions.

Additionally, Chief Minister N. Rangaswamy announced a series of relief measures to assist those affected by the cyclone. Each ration cardholder in the Union Territory will receive ₹5,000 in aid. Rangaswamy explained that the region had experienced a staggering 48% more rainfall than expected due to Cyclone Fengal, exacerbating the damage in the region.

“The cyclone has caused significant damage to crops and property,” Rangaswamy stated during a press briefing. “10,000 hectares of farmland have been destroyed, and to support the affected farmers, the government will provide ₹30,000 per hectare of damaged crops.”

The cyclone’s impact has been widespread, with substantial damage to local infrastructure. In addition to crop loss, 50 fishing boats were damaged by the floodwaters, prompting the government to allocate ₹10,000 for each boat’s repair.

Severe flooding has been reported in several regions, particularly around the Sankaraparani River in Puducherry, where over 200 homes in NR Nagar have been submerged. Residents in these areas remain stranded as rescue operations continue, led by the Indian Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). Boats have been deployed to evacuate residents from the flooded streets.

The government’s relief efforts continue, with authorities focused on minimizing further damage and ensuring the safety of the affected population.
