What’s Open and Closed in Ottawa for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

by CiCi

As Canada observes the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, many services and facilities in Ottawa will experience changes in their operations to honor the day. This federal holiday aims to acknowledge the ongoing impacts of the residential school system on Indigenous communities and families.

Closures and Service Changes

On Monday, Ottawa’s client service centers, employment and social service offices, municipal child-care centers, Site program, dental clinics, and sexual health centers will be closed. The city’s museums—including those dedicated to agriculture, aviation, history, nature, science, and war—will remain open with free admission, as will the National Gallery of Canada, which opens at noon.

The Ottawa Public Library will have seven branches operating from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., while the remaining branches will be closed. LCBO stores will open at noon. Federal government employees will have the day off, which could impact public services like passport processing and service centers.

No Changes to Services

Schools in Ottawa will remain open. Waste collection and city recreation and cultural facilities will continue as scheduled. OC Transpo and Para Transpo will operate their regular services, and there will be no road closures announced around the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation event on Parliament Hill, set for Monday afternoon.

Local shopping venues such as Bayshore Shopping Centre will function normally. Other malls, including Rideau Centre, St. Laurent, Place d’Orléans, and Tanger Outlets, have not announced any changes to their operating hours. The Beer Store has not indicated any alterations to its schedule either.

However, the Ottawa Art Gallery will be closed for the day.
