The Perfect Holiday Recipe: Brits Reveal Their Ideal Getaway Ingredients

by CiCi

A new survey has revealed that Brits have a clear formula for what makes the perfect holiday. According to a study of 2,000 adults, three key ingredients define the ideal vacation experience: indulging in local cuisine, enjoying refreshing drinks, and keeping active with sightseeing and exercise.

Savoring the Local Flavors

The research found that 77% of holidaymakers admit to relishing their food and drink more when on holiday than at any other time. On average, a perfect holiday includes sampling seven local dishes, sipping on four cocktails, and cooling off with five ice creams.

Staying Active While Relaxing

Despite the indulgence, vacationers are keen on staying active. The average holiday itinerary includes five sightseeing excursions, while travelers also manage to fit in 11 activities such as day trips and visiting landmarks. Over the course of a week, holidaymakers clock up nearly 80,000 steps, averaging 11,305 steps per day.

Capturing Memories

Holidaymakers don’t just experience their trips—they document them extensively. On average, travelers take around 88 photos during their holidays, capturing the essence of their adventures to relive once they return home.

Financial Planning for Getaways

The study, sponsored by M&S Credit Card, highlighted that the average Brit plans to spend £1,203 per person on holidays this year. Notably, 28% of travelers start saving for their next holiday immediately after returning from the previous one.

Rising Travel Expenditure

Travel spending has been steadily increasing over recent years, with a 5% rise in holiday-related expenditures and a 3% uptick in the volume of transactions compared to the previous year. This trend encompasses spending on airfare, accommodations, travel agencies, and cruises.

Prioritizing Holidays

For many, holidays are more than just a break—they’re a priority. Two-thirds of those surveyed consider taking at least one main holiday each year essential. On average, Brits plan to take three holidays in 2024, with their primary trip lasting about nine days. A significant 71% even regard their annual holiday as the highlight of their year, with 81% saying some of their most cherished memories are from these trips.

The Importance of Financial Planning

When it comes to funding these trips, 40% of holidaymakers believe it’s crucial to start saving early. Those who do save early report that it reduces financial stress (62%) and provides peace of mind (48%). Additionally, 44% say it offers a safety net for unexpected expenses, while 34% believe it allows for more detailed planning.

Nic Moran of M&S Credit Card emphasized the importance of planning, stating, “Holiday spending has continued to rise in recent years, and many of us are prioritizing our time away. It’s not just money we’re investing, but also time and effort to make our trips as enjoyable as possible.”

Planning is Key

According to the survey, thorough research (48%) and careful budgeting (34%) are the top priorities when organizing a successful holiday. Flexibility in planning is also valued by 33% of respondents, highlighting the importance of adaptability in ensuring a stress-free and enjoyable experience.

Nic Moran added, “Planning a break is a priority for many, and it’s clear that as a nation, we take our holidays seriously. By planning ahead and budgeting carefully, we can make the most of our holiday spending, ensuring a relaxing and memorable getaway.”

This survey underscores the meticulous approach Brits take toward their holidays, combining indulgence, activity, and careful planning to create the perfect getaway experience.
