The last day of Massachusetts’ tax-free holiday weekend drew throngs of local shoppers eager to take advantage of the 6.25% sales tax exemption on a range of items. Residents flocked to stores to purchase everything from new furniture and appliances to clothing and school supplies, capitalizing on the opportunity to save on their purchases.
While the tax-free weekend offered substantial savings, certain items were not eligible for the exemption. These exclusions include meals, gasoline, alcoholic beverages, and any single item priced over $2,500. Despite these limitations, numerous items were available for tax-free shopping.
Bella, a resident of Blandford, visited local stores with her family in preparation for the upcoming school year. “At Five Below, we picked up some supplies like pencils and markers,” Bella shared.
Gloria Stanczak from Springfield took advantage of the holiday to furnish her new home. “The sales tax holiday is fantastic. I’ve spent a few hundred dollars but saved significantly. My husband and I visited Lowe’s for home projects, and the savings are a big help right now,” Stanczak said.
For those who missed the in-store shopping, online purchases were still eligible for tax-free status, provided the orders were placed before the end of the holiday weekend.
Shoppers have until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday to complete their tax-free purchases before the exemption period ends and regular sales tax rates resume.
