Ohio shoppers have a golden opportunity to save on their purchases as the 2024 expanded sales tax holiday is now underway. Running from Tuesday, July 30, through 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, August 8, this year’s holiday offers a ten-day window for tax-free shopping.
Governor Mike DeWine, in collaboration with the Ohio General Assembly, has extended the sales tax holiday from its usual three-day duration to ten days. This extension applies to in-person and online purchases of eligible items valued up to $500, providing a significant benefit for families preparing for the school year or making other substantial purchases.
“Ohio’s sales tax holiday has traditionally helped families buy clothing and school supplies for the school year,” DeWine stated. “This expanded break will support Ohio’s families in acquiring back-to-school necessities and other significant purchases during a time when many household budgets are tight.”
In previous years, the sales tax holiday was limited to three days and only covered school-related items with much lower purchase limits—$75 for clothing and $20 for instructional materials and school supplies.
The current holiday allows tax-free purchases on eligible items both in-store and online, though it excludes services, watercraft, outboard motors, motor vehicles, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, vapor products, and items containing marijuana.
For parents like Channing Eaches, the extended tax holiday is a welcome relief. “We haven’t done our school supply shopping yet, so this makes me realize it’s time to get organized. We plan to head to Walmart to pick up supplies for the kids,” Eaches said.
Many Ohioans believe the extended period of the tax holiday is beneficial, providing families with ample time to take advantage of the savings. “Expanding the time frame is really helpful, allowing everyone to ensure they get all their necessary purchases,” Eaches added.
With the extended sales tax holiday in effect, Ohioans have more time than ever to maximize their savings on essential purchases.
