This Asian City That Was Low on My Travel List Is the Most Underrated Holiday Destination for Foodies

by CiCi

When my girlfriend and I decided to travel to Kuala Lumpur for New Year’s, I expected to enjoy the food, but I wasn’t prepared to be completely blown away by the city’s culinary scene.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, turned out to be a hidden gem for food lovers, with its unique blend of Malaysian, Chinese, and Indian flavors. From fine dining to street food stalls, every meal left us impressed by the diverse and rich tastes on offer.

Satay: A Must-Try Dish

If you’re visiting Malaysia, be sure to indulge in satay, a local specialty. The savory peanut sauce paired with BBQ chicken or beef skewers was absolutely irresistible. Over the course of our trip, we sampled satay at every opportunity—whether at the hotel buffet, food stalls, or during a food tour. Each version had its own twist, thanks to the fusion of various cultural influences.

The Walking Food Tour

One of the highlights of our trip was the walking food tour through Kuala Lumpur, which we joined on the recommendation of friends. Over four hours, our small group, led by an expert local guide named Steve, walked through bustling markets and historic neighborhoods, eventually reaching the famous Kampong Bharu food street. Along the way, we sampled local favorites such as Nasi Lemak, Laksa, Cendol, and of course, Durian (though I’m still not a fan of the infamous fruit!). This walking food tour was, without a doubt, the most delicious culinary experience I’ve ever had on a tour.

Dining with a View

For those who aren’t afraid of heights, Kuala Lumpur offers stunning dining options with breathtaking views. Many of the city’s top restaurants and bars are located in skyscrapers, providing a chance to enjoy fine meals while watching the skyline. We particularly enjoyed dinner and drinks at Sabayon and Mesa on 51, where we not only had a delicious meal but also watched the Petronas Twin Towers light up the night sky.

TikTok Food Recommendations

As a frequent traveler, I often turn to TikTok for food recommendations, and this trip was no exception. Influencers like @biteswithlily (an Aussie) had me craving dishes like Nasi Lemak, the frothy tea drink Teh Tarik, the refreshing icy dessert Cendol, and my personal favorite, Roti Canai. I highly recommend checking out TikTok for even more mouthwatering food spots in the city.

The Verdict

Kuala Lumpur is just an 8.5-hour flight from Sydney, making it a short trip to a vibrant and flavorful city. It’s affordable, easy to navigate, and filled with a mix of cultural and culinary experiences. After spending five nights there, we found the perfect balance between exploring the city, trying new foods, and relaxing at our hotel. If you’re a foodie, Kuala Lumpur should definitely be at the top of your travel list.
