Thessaloniki’s waterfront was transformed into a festive wonderland on Sunday as stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) athletes, dressed as Santa Claus, paddled through the waters, spreading holiday joy. The fourth annual Santa SUP event, organized by the ThesSUP team, combined the excitement of the growing sport of stand-up paddleboarding with the Christmas spirit, delighting locals and visitors alike.
Around 30 participants, all dressed in red-and-white Santa suits, paddled across the Thermaic Gulf, creating a colorful spectacle on the water. The event began at the iconic White Tower, with paddlers making their way toward Thessaloniki’s bustling port, greeting onlookers along the picturesque Nea Paralia (New Waterfront) with cheerful waves and smiles.
As they journeyed through the gulf, the Santa SUP participants were joined by members of the Coastal Rowing Club of the Friends of the Sea association, who were also engaging in festive rowing activities. The sight of the red-clad paddlers alongside rowers added to the joyful atmosphere of the day.
Virginia Panagiotopoulou, a coach at the Nautical Club of Thessaloniki, highlighted the event’s dual purpose. “Our goal is to establish Santa SUP as a beloved holiday tradition, while also showcasing the sport of stand-up paddleboarding,” she said. “SUP is one of the world’s fastest-growing sports, offering a unique way to connect with the sea. Thessaloniki’s accessible and scenic waterfront makes it an ideal place for this activity.”
The Santa SUP event has quickly become a cherished part of Thessaloniki’s holiday calendar, combining festive fun with a celebration of the city’s growing enthusiasm for water sports.
