As the festive season approaches, Queenstown Airport is gearing up for an influx of travellers, with thousands expected to pass through the terminal over the summer holiday period.
Saturday, December 21, will mark the busiest day for arrivals, with around 5,250 people anticipated to fly into Queenstown. High volumes are also expected on Sunday, December 22, Friday, December 27, and Saturday, December 28. Departures will increase following Christmas, with over 5,000 people expected to depart daily from Thursday, January 2 to Sunday, January 5.
“We anticipate strong passenger traffic throughout the school holidays, continuing until the end of January,” said Todd Grace, Chief Operating Officer of Queenstown Airport. “It’s great to see people reuniting with loved ones for Christmas, or heading off on holiday. However, with systems operating at near full capacity, the terminal will be busier than usual, so we ask travellers to plan accordingly and allow extra time for check-in, security, and boarding.”
In preparation for the holiday rush, airport officials have provided a series of travel tips to help ensure a smoother experience:
Check airport regulations: Review your baggage allowance and restrictions, particularly for items like batteries, wireless ear buds, and chargers, which must be packed in carry-on bags. International travellers should also be aware of specific rules regarding liquids, powders, and gels.
Plan your journey: With increased road traffic, it’s important to allow plenty of time to reach the airport. The NZTA Journey Planner can offer real-time updates on road conditions.
Monitor flight information: Stay informed about flight arrivals and departures by visiting Queenstown Airport’s website for real-time updates.
Consider Park & Ride: If driving to the airport, use the affordable Park & Ride service located on Brookes Road. A free shuttle operates every day, with the first departure 100 minutes before the earliest scheduled flight.
Pick-up and drop-off tips: For those picking up passengers, verify flight arrival times before leaving home. The P20 zone, located just outside the terminal, offers a 20-minute free parking window. However, the drop-off zone is strictly monitored; vehicles left unattended may result in a traffic infringement.
Security screening changes: For those who haven’t flown recently, be aware of updates to security screening. Passengers no longer need to remove electronic devices like laptops from their carry-on bags due to advanced technology.
New Zealand Traveller Declaration: For those departing New Zealand, the NZ Traveller Declaration must be completed before returning. The process is free and can be done online or through the NZTD app up to 24 hours before departure.
Patience is key: As always, the airport encourages passengers to remain patient and courteous. A smile and a little kindness can go a long way, especially during busy travel times.
