As the holiday season approaches, millions of people across the country will begin decorating their homes with lights, ornaments, and festive displays. While the excitement of creating a cheerful atmosphere is undeniable, it’s essential to prioritize safety to avoid potential fire hazards.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), U.S. fire departments respond to an estimated 835 home structure fires each year that are caused by holiday decorations—excluding Christmas trees. When trees are involved, 41% of these incidents are linked to electrical or lighting equipment malfunctions.
Tammy Yamasaki, Senior Advisor for Wildfire and Public Safety at Southern California Edison, urges holiday decorators to inspect all lights, decorations, and extension cords before use. “Nationally, 17% of home decoration fires occur in December, so it’s important to take precautions early in the season,” Yamasaki explained. She recommends checking for signs of wear or damage on all electrical items, whether they’re for indoor or outdoor use.
To further minimize risk, Yamasaki advises using power strips equipped with built-in surge and overload protection. Additionally, only use extension cords that are certified by reputable testing organizations, such as UL Solutions or ETL. Overloading outlets by plugging in too many cords or decorations can cause overheating, increasing the risk of fire.
Taking these precautions ensures a festive yet safe holiday season for you and your loved ones.
