The only Thanksgiving I’ve ever spent away from home was in 2010. At 23, I was a professional actor, freshly graduated from theater school, touring with a small company in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. We were miles away from our families, so we decided to hold a potluck-style Thanksgiving meal. Each member brought a dish that represented their family traditions, creating a diverse feast. I chose to bring my grandmother’s stuffing.
As I savored the sweetness of the cornbread, tears filled my eyes. That first bite was a taste of home.
Reflecting on that Thanksgiving, I realized the magic of creating new traditions while cherishing the old ones. Celebrating away from home can hold special significance when we find ways to connect with what truly matters. Here are eight ideas to help you embrace the holiday spirit, no matter the distance from your loved ones.
1. Cook a Family Recipe
Food offers more than just nourishment, especially during the holidays. Family recipes weave connections and create powerful feelings of nostalgia and comfort. By preparing a beloved dish, like my grandmother’s stuffing, you can feel closer to your family, even from afar. Call a relative for a family recipe and make it yourself; this experience reinforces the importance of passing down culinary traditions.
2. Have a Virtual Gathering
The pandemic showed us that technology can bridge the gap between loved ones. Schedule video calls to share a meal or cook together virtually. Last Thanksgiving, when I was ill and unable to join my family, a heartfelt video chat allowed me to feel connected while enjoying a meal reminiscent of home.
3. Create New Traditions
As life evolves, so do our traditions. If you’re away for the holidays, think about how to infuse your celebrations with new meaning. Consider virtual traditions, like watching a holiday movie simultaneously with loved ones or engaging in online games. Reflect on what matters to you during the holiday season and make time for those values.
4. Practice Gratitude
Take time to reflect on the relationships that matter most. Write a gratitude list and call your loved ones to share your feelings. Engaging with gratitude can bring you closer, even when you’re apart.
5. Wrap and Send Gifts
Show your loved ones that you’re thinking of them by mailing gifts. Consider scheduling a virtual gift opening or organizing a virtual Secret Santa event, allowing everyone to gather online for the occasion.
6. Volunteer
Connecting with your community can be fulfilling. Seek volunteer opportunities nearby, or check in on friends and neighbors who might appreciate a helping hand or some companionship. Giving back lifts both your spirits and those of others.
7. Stay Positive
Being away from loved ones can stir up difficult emotions. While it’s important to acknowledge these feelings, try not to dwell on them. Focus on the positive aspects of your life, no matter how small. Cherish the warmth of a fireplace, enjoy the comfort of your favorite pajamas, and embrace the joy in simple moments.
8. Indulge in Self-Care
Create a cozy atmosphere at home to honor the holiday season. A quiet evening by the fire with a warm drink can be incredibly soothing. Take time to pamper yourself with a bubble bath, wrap yourself in a soft blanket, or dive into that book you’ve been meaning to read. Prioritize self-care and make this holiday memorable for yourself.
By embracing these ideas, you can cultivate joy and warmth during the holidays, regardless of where you find yourself.
