Goodwick’s Food & Fun club has made a significant impact this summer, offering local children a vibrant blend of activities and nutritious meals during the school break.
As schools resume this week after the summer vacation, many students will return having had limited social interaction over the past six weeks. However, this was not the case for many at Ysgol Gymunedol Wdig / Goodwick Community School, where the school’s summer enrichment program provided a lively and engaging experience for students.
The Food & Fun club, part of the School Holiday Enrichment Programme, has successfully operated in Goodwick for three consecutive years since its pilot in 2022. The program is designed to offer healthy meals, nutritional education, physical activities, and enrichment opportunities to children from socially disadvantaged backgrounds during the holidays.
This year’s program was particularly successful, with an average of 40 pupils attending daily. Headteacher Jonathan Jones expressed his satisfaction with the program’s reception, noting that the positive feedback from parents has been overwhelming.
Operating Monday through Thursday over a three-week period, the program provided a structured schedule for the children. Mornings began with breakfast, followed by an array of activities, and concluded with a hot lunch. Additionally, a weekly family lunch allowed parents to join their children for a shared meal.
Jones praised the contributions of both the school staff and external partners who helped deliver diverse and engaging activities, which were key to the program’s success. “The program was a tremendous success,” Jones said. “It plays a crucial role in our school’s calendar, and we are excited to offer it again in the summer of 2025.”
