The UK’s leading dog charity, Dogs Trust, has shared its top tips for ensuring a “pawsitively” perfect holiday for your furry friend.
According to a Dogs Trust survey, more than two-thirds of UK dog owners take their dogs along on summer holidays. Most of these owners, about 86 percent, prefer staying in rental properties or holiday cottages. Campsites and hotels are also popular, chosen by 45 percent and 22 percent of owners, respectively.
To help make holidays enjoyable for dogs, Dogs Trust offers the following advice:
Acclimate Your Pet to Car Journeys: Before embarking on a long trip, get your dog used to the car with shorter journeys.
Pack Essentials: Ensure you bring a lead, harness, collar, tag, food and water bowls, dog toys, poo bags, and any necessary medication. Familiar items, like a favorite blanket, can also help your dog feel at home.
Maintain Routine: Try to keep feeding and exercise schedules similar to those at home, as dogs thrive on routine.
Plan Rest Periods: Include plenty of breaks in your itinerary and ensure that your destinations are dog-friendly.
Microchip and Update Details: Make sure your dog is microchipped and that the details are up to date to facilitate a quick reunion if you get separated.
Keep Vaccinations Current: Ensure your dog’s vaccinations and flea, tick, and worm treatments are up to date.
Know the Nearest Vet: Identify the location of an emergency vet at your destination.
Weather Considerations: Protect your dog from the sun and avoid exercising during the hottest parts of the day.
