Christmas in July Brings Holiday Cheer to Greene County Museum

by CiCi

The Greene County Historical Society is set to celebrate its inaugural “Christmas in July” at the society’s museum in Waynesburg on July 20. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., visitors can indulge in holiday cheer despite the summer heat.

“We’ll have an ugly T-shirt contest, the Museum’s Brick Oven Concessions, the Frost Fairy truck, and a visit from Santa,” said Janis Rohanna, the museum’s executive assistant and events coordinator. “It’s just meant to be fun. We’re putting a summer spin on Christmas and doing something to bring the community together.”

The event will also feature a presentation on novelty Christmas songs, children’s activities, artisan vendors, and other holiday-themed entertainment. “In addition to the event-related activities and happenings, visitors can enjoy the museum and grounds and see what’s new,” Rohanna added. “We are constantly making improvements and expanding the display areas or changing existing displays, so there is always something new to see.”

Currently, the society is undertaking the restoration of 150 windows in the three-story building. They have already renovated the Main Exhibit Hall and General Store, with many more projects on the horizon.

The Greene County Museum, formerly a poor farm or county home, houses over 30,000 artifacts in its 52 rooms, showcasing pieces from the 18th and 19th centuries within its 35,000 square feet.

Maintaining the building, which was constructed between 1857 and 1887, is costly. Although admission to “Christmas in July” is by donation, proceeds from the event will support the museum and the upkeep of its building and grounds.

The museum is located at 918 Rolling Meadows Road, Waynesburg.
