Wicklow Holiday Park Proposes Ambitious Open Farm Project

by CiCi

A planning application has been submitted to Wicklow County Council by Tanark PLC for the development of an expansive open farm project at Millrace Holiday Park in Ballynacarrig, Brittas Bay.

The proposal outlines plans for a farm diversification tourism accommodation and open farm initiative spread across a 6.76-hectare site. Key features of the development include dedicated visitor areas comprising a 50 sqm petting shed, pens, paddocks, play areas, and gardens interconnected by a ‘farm link trail’. Enhancing visitor amenities, the project will feature an entry building encompassing a 44 sqm farm shop, coffee dock, and reception, alongside an 88 sqm communal shelter intended for picnics and BBQs.

Further facilities will encompass a guest amphitheatre and a 100 sqm farm food building equipped with kitchen and dining areas, catering to both communal and self-catering needs. The project also envisions the construction of 12 subterranean glamping pods reminiscent of ‘Hobbit’ homes, complemented by the renovation and extension of an existing farmhouse into four holiday units, complete with a first-floor balcony.

Additionally, the development includes the placement of four shepherd huts around a pond linked by walkways, and upgrades to existing farm entrances onto the L5605 road, including enhancements to walls, pillars, and security gates catering to scheme vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.

The comprehensive proposal also outlines provisions for new internal roads, footpaths, vehicle and bike parking facilities—including spaces for disabled and electric vehicle charging—ensuring seamless integration with the existing Millrace Holiday Park infrastructure.

This application marks the fifth attempt to secure planning permission for enhancements at the site, with previous applications focusing on infrastructure improvements for the holiday park. The most recent application, approved by An Bord Pleanála in 2022, allowed for additional caravan and mobile home spaces following an appeal process.

A decision on the current application is anticipated from Wicklow County Council by August 13, with public submissions accepted until July 23.
