The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government, who extended congratulations to all Nigerians on this significant occasion.
In his statement, Tunji-Ojo urged citizens to reflect on the contributions of the nation’s founding fathers and reaffirm their commitment to maintaining Nigeria’s unity, security, peace, and indivisibility. He emphasized the importance of upholding the principles of democratic governance and underscored President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to implementing positive reforms aimed at revitalizing the economy and improving security.

Traditionally celebrated on May 29 to commemorate Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999, Democracy Day was moved to June 12 in 2018 by President Muhammadu Buhari as a tribute to Chief M.K.O Abiola, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s struggle for democracy. The date serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made for the cause of democracy and the importance of upholding democratic principles.
The 2024 Democracy Day holds particular significance as it marks the second celebration under the leadership of President Tinubu, who assumed office as Nigeria’s Commander-In-Chief on May 29, 2023.
